Leeds rebound downing sorry Wildcats

The Leeds Rhinos have won the battle of Super League's cellar-dwellers downing Wakefield Trinity 34-18.

David Fusitu'a began the scoring for the visitors in just the third minute charging over the top of the Wakefield defence. Four minutes later, Morgan Gannon crossed when he finished off a lovely set play in what would be a long night for Willie Poaching's side. The onslaught continued moments later when Harry Newman crossed in the right corner and it was soon turning into a cricket score.

A dropped ball from a clearing kick saw Ash Handley grab the first of his three tries and with Rhyse Martin's conversion, Leeds had a 24-0 lead. Handley grabbed his second try moments later off another soft error and even worse defence which gave the visitors a commanding 30-0 half-time buffer.

Wakefield responded first after half-time when Matty Ashurst crossed after a successful bomb defusal. Handley completed his hattrick in the 62nd minute with a spectacular put down in the right-hand corner giving the visitors a 28 point lead. Wakefield grabbed two consolation tries in the last five minutes through Max Jowitt and Tom Johnstone, but by then the damage had already been done. Leeds ran out convincing 34-18 winners with the scoreline not reflecting the Rhinos' dominance.

Catalans overpower Warrington

Catalans have overcome a furious finish to defeat the Warrington Wolves 24-18.

It was the Dragons that got off to the best start when Matt Whitley crossed after a furious opening for fourteen minutes. Whitley scored off a brilliant short ball from Josh Drinkwater and the Dragons had an early 6-0 advantage. Warrington provided the swift reply with a touch over ten minutes later when Matty Ashton crossed off a break down the field from Tobey King. The scores remained at 6 all at half-time.

Straight after the break, Catalans took control when Arthur Romano crossed six minutes after the resumption in a bizarre incident, Warrington dropped the bomb, and Romano kicked ahead and won the race to ground the football first. Mitchell Pearce crossed for the Dragons just under ten minutes later winning the race to Drinkwater's grubber as the Aussie combo continues to build.

Mickael Goudemand sealed the game with a bizarre grubber kick which Warrington left to him to pick up and score. With the game at 24-6, Warrington made too many mistakes and left their running way too late. Josh Charnley scored twice in the final two minutes, but they left their run extremely late as Catalans held on for a six point victory.

St Helens continue their dominating start

St Helens have maintained their undefeated start downing Hull-Kingston Rovers 42-8 in a comprehensive, one-sided performance.

It was destined to be a long night for the home fans when Sione Mata'utia crossed after just four minutes for an early 6-0 advantage. Despite the possession count favouring the visitors. Hull KR was the next to score when Ryan Hall crossed in the left corner doing well to stay in play and reduce the margin to just two points.

From there it was one-way traffic, the carnage began with under ten minutes to go before half-time when Tommy Makinson scored off a questionable pass from Jack Welsby. The conversion from the sideline extended the margin to eight points. Lewis Dodd grabbed a quickfire double, on both occasions showcasing his magnificent running game and in the space of ten minutes, what was a competitive score-line, turned into a blowout with Saints leading by 20.

Straight after the break, it was much of the same, Mata'utia grabbed his second when he barged over the top of some would-be defence. Seven minutes later, Makinson grabbed his second when the Robins defence jammed in which gave him an open run to the line. Alex Walmsley grabbed the next try in the sixty-fourth minute when he won the race to a clever chip from Dodd.

Hull grabbed a consolation try in the latter stages of the match when Frankie Halton outmuscled the defenders to slam the football down. Saints had the last laugh when Makinson completed his hattrick when a grubber kick in the in-goal couldn't be cleaned up by Hull and Makinson slammed it down finishing the 42-8 romp in style.

Late field goal helps complacent Wigan overcome brave Toulouse

A late field goal from Wigan halfback Harry Smith was enough to seal a comeback over a brave Toulouse outfit 29-28.

Wigan got off to a flying start, scoring two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Jai Field opened the scoring when he received a lovely offload and ran 40 meters to score under the sticks. Minutes later, Wigan were in again when Zak Hardaker finished off a lovely set play and Toulouse was in a mad dash of panic.

To the home side's credit, they fought back incredibly well and grabbed a try off a cross-field kick when Guy Armitage snagged up the loose ball to score. Then another Tony Gigot kick saw Hardaker lose the ball and Maxine Stefani forced his way over the line with Chris Hankinson converting to level the scores at 10-10 on the half-hour.

Toulouse took the lead shortly after when Gigot pounced on a loose ball and grounded it just inside the dead-ball line and an upset appeared on the cards. Gigot and hooker Eloi Pelissier each slotted field goals just before half-time to make it 18-10 at the break.

Wigan was quick to score after the break when Cade Cust chased his own grubber kick and dived on the ball to score and reduce the margin to just two points. Toulouse grabbed two tries in the space of four minutes, first Matty Russell finished off a lovely set play in the corner to give Olympique a 22-16 lead before Armitage grabbed his second outmuscling several Wigan defenders to extend the margin by 12 points.

Liam Marshall kept Wigan in touch when he just scraped in at the right corner for a try on his 100th appearance for the Warriors. Before the wizardry of Jai Field crossed in the opposite corner. With both conversions successful, it was 28 all. Toulouse had a field goal charged down, and off the ensuing set, Harry Smith slotted the field goal to secure the comeback win.

Giants overcome sick Red Devils

Huddersfield has run away with the points downing Salford Red Devils 34-2.

Salford opened the scoring with a Marc Sneyd penalty goal, but unfortunately, that would be the end of their scoring for the afternoon. Will Pryce continued his great start to his Super League career scoring a great try in the ninth minute.

A dour struggle ensued for the remainder of the half until Chris McQueen scored seven minutes from half-time off a lovely grubber kick from Tui Lolohea, a yellow card for Ryan Lannon on half-time gave Pryce a gift of two points and the Giants led by 12 at the break.

Huddersfield ran away with the game in the second 40 which began in the forty-seventh minute when Innes Senior crossed in the corner, stepping up the winger Joe Burgess to finish in the corner. Chris Hill barged over ten minutes later continuing a promising day for the home side.

Five minutes later, Brodie Croft had his pass intercepted by Jermaine McGilvary and the winger raced away to score under the posts. Senior grabbed his second inside the final ten minutes to put an exclamation point on a Gigantic victory for Huddersfield early in the new season.

Tigers rebound and hold off Hull FC

Castleford has had a great performance holding off a fast-finishing Hull FC 33-26 before a big crowd at the Jungle.

Hull had the worst possible start when they failed to catch the kick-off which fell into the arms of Daniel Smith and the Tigers scored without a doubt the fastest try of the season thus far and shot to an early 6-0 advantage. The Tigers potted over a penalty goal when Danny Houghton was given a yellow card in the eighth minute.

Hull was next to score in the twenty-ninth minute when Danny Houghton scored upon his return from the sin bin and crossed to reduce the margin to just two points. Greg Eden soon restored the Tigers' six-point advantage. Castleford hit Hull with the double blow when Cheyse Blair charged over to extend the margin back out to two converted tries.

But Castleford did what Hull did to start the first half off the ensuing kick-off and Josh Griffen scored for the black and whites to cut the half-time margin to 6. After the break, Castleford was first to score when Gareth O'Brien crossed when he sliced through Hull's defence. Eden had his second try just six minutes later when he finished off a lovely set play.

Hull wouldn't go away despite being down by 14 points. Adam Swift crossed in the fifty-fifth minute when he produced a lovely finish in the left corner. Hull would score again minutes later when Conner Wynne won the race to a neat grubber kick and the margin was cut to within a try.

Eden capped his hattrick in bizarre circumstances when he appeared to go into touch after a great tackle by Jake Connor, but the officials cleared and gave Eden his hattrick. Jamie Shaul crossed late to give Hull hope, but an O'Brien field goal with under two minutes to play sealed the game for the Tigers.
