Hull FC continue inconsistent form by crushing Rhinos

Hull FC continue to defy the form guide crushing the Leeds Rhinos 31-8 to open Round 5 of the Super League season.

Jake Connor had a point to prove after being left out of Shaun Wane's England squad last week and opened the scoring after a scrappy opening quarter to the game which saw opposing front-rowers Kane Evans and Matt Prior sent to the sin bin. Connor's show and go proved too much for the Leeds defence as Hull had an early 6-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Hull crossed again when Adam Swift scored off a lovely cut out pass from Jake Connor and the black and whites had a 12-0 cushion. That margin extended almost immediately when Connor crossed for his double just before the break showcasing the same skills as his first try and Hull had an imposing 18-0 half-time lead.

After the break, the Hull rampage continued when Joe Lovodua provided a lovely short ball to Andre Savelio who charged over to score and make the scoreline 24-0. Just past the hour mark, Lovodua scored to put the game out of reach for Leeds at 30-0. Connor capped off a man of the match performance with a go-ahead field goal to put his side up by 31. Leeds got two late tries in the final ten minutes through Tom Briscoe and Liam Sutcliffe, but all it will do is help out in the for and against category.

Wakefield breaks their duck downing Toulouse

Wakefield Trinity has won their first match of the season downing Toulouse Olympique in a dour struggle by 12 points.

Liam Hood ducked out of acting half to cross for the home side just inside the game's opening stages for an early 6-0 advantage. Minutes later, the visitors hit back when Guy Armitage crossed after a well-worked set play from Toulouse and the game looked set to be a back and forth encounter.

The rest of the first 40 saw just a solitary penalty goal from Wakefield's Brad Walker and the game was evenly poised at 8-6 at half-time. Straight after the resumption, Wakefield made their intentions known and it was Kelepi Tanginoa who crossed for the home side when he barged over off a simple crash play and the Wildcats had an 8 point cushion.

Toulouse came close on several occasions, but as has often been the case this season, they lacked the necessary details when they needed to convert. The match wasn't sealed until seven minutes from time when Liam Kay did well to keep the ball in play and Walker scooped on the loose ball to score the game-sealing try.

Lewis the star as Rovers slain Red Devils

A double from Hull KR's Mikey Lewis helped Hull KR secure a good victory over the Salford Red Devils in Round 5 of the Super League season.

It was once again another slow start from Salford and the points began to flow in the fifteenth minute when Elliot Minchella crossed off a crash play and Rovers had an early 6-0 advantage. Salford had plenty of chances but couldn't break through the Rovers' defence.

Interchange forward Matthew Storton crossed for Rovers with under ten minutes to go before the break after another crash play and the score was 12-0. Salford's Ryan Lannon was sent to the sin bin with five minutes to go and Mikey Lewis crossed making Salford pay for going down a man and they trailed 18-0 at half-time.

Salford turned it around after half-time when ever-reliable winger Ken Sio crossed four minutes after the resumption of play and the Red Devils only trailed by 12. The home side thought a comeback was on when Shane Wright crossed to reduce the margin to 8.

Then they were partying in the stands when Marc Snyed intercepted a goal-line pass before linking up with Joe Burgess who raced away to score. Unfortunately, any hope of a comeback was short-lived when Lewis completed his double in the last ten minutes sealing an impressive victory for Hull KR. A penalty goal on full-time extended the final margin to 10 points.

Saints tame sorry Wolves to maintain a 5-0 start

St Helens continue their undefeated start downing Warrington 28-2.

Warrington opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute when Stefan Ratchford chipped over a penalty goal, unfortunately for the visitors that would be the last of their scoring this afternoon. Sione Mata'utia was sin-binned for a late hit on George Williams although replays suggested it was only a fraction of a second late. George Williams followed him minutes later for a professional foul.

Jack Welsby crossed for the game's opening try in the twenty-third minute after winning the race to the ball off a grubber kick. Tommy Makinson struck for the first of his two tries nailing the hammer blow on the visitors just before half-time.

There was no way back for the visitors when Makinson gathered in Welsby's cut-out pass to score his second try after the break at the 53-minute mark. St Helens were in cruise control by then and added further tries through Mark Percival, who scored from a scrum play, and Johnny Lomax, who pounced on an error from Warrington with Lewis Dodd adding both conversions.

Leutele's hattrick saves Giants from desperate Tigers

The Huddersfield Giants have overcome a fierce Castleford comeback, due in large parts to a Ricky Leutele hattrick in the final quarter-hour to win 36-24.

Huddersfield got off to the better start and crossed inside the opening ten minutes when Owen Trout charged over a Danny Levi short ball for the early six-point advantage. Seven minutes later, the Giants went to the skies, Chris McQueen came down with the ball before unloading to Luke Yates who crossed to extend the lead to two converted tries. Huddersfield nailed a seismic blow on the stroke of half-time when Jermaine McGillvary crossed in the corner for a hefty 18 point half-time lead whilst Jacob Trueman was sin-binned for the visitors.

Danny Levi was sin-binned just before the break, and the Tigers capitalised on their one-man advantage when Joe Westerman broke the line and linked up with Trueman to cross and the Tigers were back in the contest. Minutes later and back on even numbers, Mahe Fonua charged over from dummy half and the Tigers were within a converted try.

When McGillvary was sin-binned, Greg Eden crossed down McGillvary's side and the game was locked up at 18-18. Castleford completed the comeback off the ensuing set when Trueman crossed for his second try after an Eden linebreak and the Tigers led by 6. George Lawler's sin bin for the Tigers would be a turning point, which allowed Rick Leutele to cross for a hattrick in the space of fifteen minutes crossing in the 64th, 72nd and 78th minutes to complete the Huddersfield comeback. Each tries capitalising on the space left by Lawler's absence, the last showcasing magnificent strength to get the ball down inside the field of play.

Wigan bowled for a duck against determined Dragons

The extra week spent in France by Wigan proved to be misjudged as the Warriors were held to nil for the first time this season going down 28-0 to a more determined Catalans Dragons side.

Catalans opened the scoring off a scrum play when Mitchell Pearce stepped past some sloppy Wigan defence for the game's opening try and the Dragons had an early 6-0 lead. Sloppy was the name of the game for Wigan in the opening stages when two gift penalties allowed Sam Tomkins to pot over two penalty goals and extend the margin to 10 points.

Catalans nailed the big blow right on half-time when Michael McIlorum put a grubber kick to the Wigan line, Mickael Goudemand was first to dive on it and plant the ball over the line, with Tomkins nailing the conversion making it 16-0 at half-time.

Catalans extended their lead to 22-0 when Pearce pounced for his second try as Wigan fumbled once more in their in-goal area showcasing the NRL champion's years of experience. Tomkins added his fifth conversion of the night to start making the score-line ugly for the visitors. Samisoni Langi needed the video referee's inspection to prove he had slid over the line in the 62nd minute to make it 28-0 with Tomkins' conversion.

The aggression got the better of both sides in the final minutes when an all-in melee was instigated by Bateman and Jordan Dezaria in the final minutes, with referee Robert Hicks issuing red cards to Dezaria and Wigan's Kaide Ellis.
