Giants overrun undermanned Wigan

Huddersfield have closed the gap on the Super League table with a well-earnt victory over Wigan in a Challenge Cup final dress-rehearsal.

It's important to note that both sides were missing a combined 15 players between them from the sides that won their semis so neither coach will read much into this result. It was the home side that scored the first try inside the opening ten minutes, when Innes Senior crossed for the first of his three tries off a well worked scrum play to give the home side an early lead.

Huddersfield nabbed a second try fifteen minutes before the break. It came from a good offload from Jack Ashworth and Ricky Leutele crossed to give his side an early twelve point cushion. Wigan could cut the lead in half just before the break, when Sam Halsall crossed after he backed up in support following a long break by fullback Bevan French to allow the Warriors to trail by just six at the half.

The second half started well for the home side with Senior grabbing his second after finishing off a great pass from Tui Lolohea. Huddersfield added a major blow when Joe Wardle finished off a great short-side raid and the Giants had a commanding 16 point lead.

Wigan made the game interesting in the final quarter of the contest, when they bagged two tries in the space of three minutes. Their goal line attack was on full display when Halsall grabbed his second when he finished off a classic Wigan set play. Three minutes later, Abbas Miski took a bomb that the Giants let bounce and passed inside to Matty Nicholson to cross on his Wigan debut.

The Giants sealed the match nine minutes from time when Sam Hewitt put the match beyond two converted tries. Despite Nicholson completing his debut double, Senior rounded out his hattrick in the last minute of play to seal a well-earnt victory for the Giants.

Determined defence drives Saints home

St Helens put their shock Challenge Cup exit behind them to defeat Hull FC by two converted tries in their Round 12 Super League clash.

It was Saints who crossed for the first try inside the opening ten minutes when Tommy Makinson finished off a trick shot from the tap restart from James Roby. Defence dominated the contest and both sides were whacking each other around in the hope of stealing the ascendancy.

Hull put an end to the dominating Saints defence when Darnell McIntosh outpaced Mark Percival to score off full-back Jake Connor's well-placed kick to tie the game up. Saints stunned Hull right on the half-time siren when Jack Welsby outmuscled his way to the goal-line to give Saints a deserved converted try lead at half-time.

In a scrappy second period, where both sides struggled for control and where Saints James Bell was sin binned for a ‘dangerous tackle'. Makinson added a penalty goal when Hull gave away a ruck penalty in front. Saints decided to make amends for last weekend's shock CC semi final loss when Johnny Lomax backed up a long break from Konrad Hurrell to extend the margin to 14 points. Makinson sealed the game when he clinched his second try as Saints threatened to cut loose. Hull had the final say when McIntosh went over for his second and Connor added the conversion.

Fire breathing Dragons tame sorry Wolves

Catalans welcomed the return of Sam Tomkins from a broken leg as they handed Warrington a thumping this evening by 32 points.

Tomkins opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the opening stages. However, Warrington surprisingly started the game as the better side and were rewarded with the first try inside the opening twenty minutes.

Wolves scrum-half George Williams broke the line which led to winger Connor Wrench scoring the first try. Peter Mata'utia on target from the touchline with the conversion to make it 6-2. Tom Davies rebounded for the home side when he scored in the corner to level the scores at 6-6 and it's where it stayed at the change of ends.

Tomkins started the second stanza much-like the first with a stock standard penalty goal to retake the lead. Mata'utia answered back with a penalty goal to lock the scores up at eight all. Catalans breathed fire on a vulnerable Wolves defence when Mitch Pearce crashed over just shy of the hour mark.

From there, the flood gates opened with further tries from Bosquet before a flurry of tries in the last five minutes to Dudson, Yaha and Mourgue (who was denied earlier in the game). It looks as if the early season slump the Dragons were in has well and truly turned around for the French side.

Battle to avoid relegation sees Toulouse come out on top

Well, it's a match at the wrong end of the ladder, but one with more hunger and desperation to avoid relegation. This time, Super League's newcomers Toulouse Olympique defeated Wakefield Trinity 20-14.

After an early penalty goal from Chris Hankinson which gave the home side an early lead, it was the visitors who settled stronger and quickly. It was Lewis Murphy who crossed in the corner to give his side a narrow four point lead.

Toulouse hit back when fullback Olly Ashall-Bott crossed for the first of his two tries when he outmuscled the opposition defence and was ruled by the in-goal judge to ground the ball with downward pressure and re-take the lead. Not to be outdone, Wakefield answered back before the break when Liam Kay crossed capitalising on sloppy defence to give his side a four point advantage.

Toulouse crossed first after the break when Matt Russell finished off a great set play down the left-hand side to cross for the home side and re-take the lead. Hankinson added a further two points to extend the margin to four.

Craig Hall crossed just on the hour mark, but Mason Lino left the kicking boots at home and the match was tied at 14. Ashall-Bott sealed Toulouse's second win just seven minutes from the end with his second try of the contest.

Salford move one win closer to safety

With the race to avoid the relegation zone well and truly on, Salford grabbed a vital victory over fellow cellar-dwellers Leeds 23-8.

Salford began this match with a flurry of enthusiasm nabbing the opening two tries of the contest in the space of two minutes. Ken Sio opened the scoring after ten minutes when he finished off a crisp backline movement. Two minutes later, it was on again down the other side of the field when Deon Lewis-Cross broke the line before linking up with Joe Burgess and Salford were up 10-0.

Leeds did well to hang in the contest, and their efforts were rewarded when Ash Handley crossed out-wide following some sloppy edge defence from the Red-Devils. With just a touch under ten minutes to go in the opening half, Andy Ackers was in the right place at the right time to dive on a Brodie Croft grubber.

With Leeds looking more and more dangerous, Marc Sneyd potted over a field goal to seal the game. But, not to be outdone, Salford made doubly sure of the result when Ryan Brierley strolled over to score for the home side. MIkolaj Oledzki nabbed a late consolation try for the visitors, which might be handy when it comes to for and against later in the season as they're only one point ahead of Wakefield and three ahead of Toulouse.

Tigers feast on sorry Rovers

Castleford have capitalised on a dominant first half to shut out fellow semi-final contenders Hull KR 32-0 in a convincing and dominating display.

George Griffin crossed in the fifth minute when he carried three Rovers defenders over the line to cross for the opening try. Liam Watts was yellow carded for the home side in the eighth minute, but that only halted the Tigers for ten minutes.

Upon his return, normal transmission resumed when Paul McShane delivered a wonderful pass to

Kenny Edwards who stepped his way past some woeful Hull KR defence to grab the second try. Jake Mamo grabbed the first of his two tries three minutes later when he supported winger Darrel Olpherts and crossed.

Jason Qaraqare wouldn't be denied on the other side of the park when he sprinted the best part of 50 meters to score untouched. Castleford had a convincing 24-0 lead at half-time.

The carnage continued after the break when Mamo grabbed his double following an intercept where he sprinted the length of the field to extend the margin out to 28. Qaraqare completed his double with just over 10 minutes to go when he took a lovely rainbow pass from Gareth O'Brien to conclude their scoring raid for the afternoon.
