Saints confirm greatness with their fourth straight Grand Final win

St Helens have won their fourth straight Super League title in a 24-12 win against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday night at Old Trafford.

The Saints got off to a perfect start when five-eighth Jonny Lomax linked up with prop forward Matty Lees who streaked away for a 6-0 start.

It was double delight for the Saints when Tommy Makinson dribbled a kick behind the defence and youngster Jon Bennison touched down after it was confirmed by the video referee.

The Rhinos avoided going behind three scores when Rhyse Martin was penalised for a dangerous tackle and the kick was missed by Makinson.

Inspired by a huge run from Zak Hardaker, Leeds got on the board just before half-time. The ball was kept alive well and Kruise Leeming contorted enough to make it 12-6.

St Helens restored their twelve-point advantage just after the break. Konrad Hurrell blasted into the defence on the inside ball and found the line.

A busy afternoon for the video referee who was invited to participate again after Man of Steel nominee and Young player of the year Jack Welsby kicked for Mark Percival for 24-6.

The game was gone but Leeds did find some late consolation in Martin. He started the move down the right wing before walking in the score then making it 38 straight conversions.

Lifting the trophy for the fourth straight time just adds another jewel to the St Helens crown. They have confirmed themselves as the premier side in the Super League competition.

It also marks the final chapter of a successful three-year coaching reign for Kristian Woolf at the famous club, with Woolf headed to assist Wayne Bennett at new NRL club the Dolphins back in Australia in 2023. He's then tipped to succeed Bennett in 2025.

For Leeds Rhinos, it wasn't the fairytale ending they expected after their wins over Castleford, Huddersfield and Wigan but it was a dream run for Rohan Smith's men to make the decider.
