Round 12 in Super League got underway with three Friday night games, including a battle between two of the league's struggling sides. Hull FC succumbed to a tenth consecutive defeat, going down 30-22 to a Castleford Tigers side who are just beginning to find their feet.

Although the final scoreline was tight, there was always a sense that the Tigers were holding FC at arm's length. Castleford made a fast start, opening the scoring through Liam Horne after just six minutes. Joe Westerman broke through the centre of the FC defence on halfway, before passing inside to Horne for a simple score, with Rowan Milnes making no mistake with the kick.

The Tigers' next score which came in the ninth minute, was an absolute peach. With the ball inside the Tigers' 20, they worked the ball out to winger, Jason Qaraqare who offloaded inside to Tex Hoy. When Hoy was faced with the Hull full-back, Logan Moy, he chipped the ball over his head, chasing it down to collect and score a brilliant try against his former club. Milnes was on target again to make the score 12-0.

However, a Castleford mistake close to their own line let the Airlie Birds back into the game. Innes Senior dropped a simple pass 10 metres from his own line to gift the ball to Hull. From the resulting play the ball, a brilliant looping pass from Jake Trueman found Harvey Barron on the wing who touched down to cut the deficit. Ben Reynolds added the extras to reduce Castleford's lead to six points.

The sides then exchanged scores before half-time, in an engaging contest. Castleford struck first through Milnes in the 31st minute. Milnes dabbed in goal, and Liam Sutcliffe appeared to have the situation under control. However, he inexplicably fumbled the ball, gifting Milnes a try on a plate, which he duly converted. However, he quickly atoned for his error, intercepting a pass and running 80 metres to score just before half-time. The conversion was missed, however, meaning the Tigers lead 18-10 at the break.

The Tigers struck first in the second half with Qareqare grabbing his first try of the night. The Black and Whites defence was unable to deal with a Milnes kick. Sylvester Namo picked up the loose ball, before finding Qareqare to score in the corner, with Milnes again on the target with the boot. Hull were unable to deal with Milnes' kicking game, and another pinpoint grubber allowed Corey Hall to score their fifth try of the night. Milnes added the extras and the Tigers appeared to be out of sight.

However, FC showed some fighting spirit, and grabbed two late scores to give the Tigers fans some late nerves. On loan Wigan Warriors man, Tiaki Chan, scored the first after taking in a good offload from Sutcliffe before powering over to score. Sutcliffe was involved again in their final score, passing the ball out wide to Harvey Barron. Barron kicked inside from the wing, allowing Jake Trueman to touch down and score in the 74th

minute.

Reynolds kicked both conversions to restore some pride for FC, but, in truth, they were well beaten as they continue their hunt for just a second win of the season.

Huddersfield Giants 10 Leigh Leopards 16
Venue: John Smith's Stadium, Huddersfield

Date: Fri, 24th May.   Kickoff: 8:00 PM.   Halftime: Leigh 14-0.   Penalties: Huddersfield 12-10.   Referee: James Vella.   Crowd: 4,385.

Huddersfield: Lolohea, Wallis, Naiqama, Marsters, Halsall; Russell, Clune; Hill, Deakin, Yates (C), Murchie, Hewitt, Cudjoe. Int: Golding, Rushton, Wilson, Ikahihifo.
Leigh: Moylan, Hanley, Chamberlain, Leutele, Charnley; Hardaker, Lam (C); Amone, Ipape, Mulhern, O'Donnell, Halton, Trout. Int: Hughes, Norman, Dwyer, McIntosh.

Huddersfield Giants (10)
Tries: Kevin Naiqama, Sam Hewitt
Goals: Oliver Russell 1/2

Leigh Leopards (16)
Tries: Josh Charnley, Edwin Ipape
Goals: Matt Moylan 4/4

Leigh Leopards' resurgence continues, as they registered a fourth win of the season against Huddersfield Giants. The two sides' seasons appear to be heading in opposite directions at the moment.

A good run of form had propelled Huddersfield into playoff contention, however, a run of defeats and a difficult month ahead means they face an uphill battle to remain in contention for the top six. Leigh, on the other hand, have won three in their last four games as they attempt to drag themselves back into playoff contention.

This was a tight encounter, with both sides scoring two tries a piece, ultimately, the Leopards' superior goal-kicking won them the encounter. Josh Charnley opened the scoring for the Leopards after 11 minutes. Leigh played the ball 10 metres away from the Huddersfield posts, and worked the ball through hands before finding Charnley to touchdown in the corner, with Matt Moylan adding the extras from the touchline.

Moylan added two points from a penalty, with Olly Russell receiving a yellow card for a high shot, before the Leopards extended their lead further before half-time. Receiving the ball from dummy half 20 metres out, Edwin Ipape ran back against the grain to score in the face of some soft defence, with Moylan adding the extras. However, two Leigh yellow cards before halftime changed the complexion of the game after halftime, with Leigh leading 14-0.

With Russell back on the field, and Leigh down to 11, Huddersfield scored the first try of the second half through Sam Hewitt. Hewitt took in a short pass to crash over and give the Giants a foothold in the game, however, the conversion was missed, meaning the Leopards remained 10 points ahead.  Moylan added another penalty in the 69th minute, to extend their lead back to 12 points.

The Giants scored the final try of the game in the 77th minute, through Kevin Naiqama, but it was too little too late. Naiqama latched onto a clever kick-through to score, but the Giants were consigned to another defeat. Leigh remain five points off sixth place, but they have momentum and should not be written off from the play-off picture just yet.

St Helens 40 Leeds Rhinos 10
Venue: Totally Wicked Stadium, St Helens

Date: Fri, 24th May.   Kickoff: 8:00 PM.   Halftime: St Helens 12-6.   Penalties: St Helens 6-3.   Referee: Liam Moore.   Crowd: 11,367.

St Helens: Welsby, Makinson, Hurrell, Percival, Blake; Lomax (C), Dodd; Mata'utia, Clark, Lees, Sironen, Batchelor, Bell. Int: Mbye, Delaney, Davies, Stephens.
Leeds: Miller, Russell, Newman, Roberts, Handley; Croft, Frawley; Oledzki, O'Connor, Sangaré, McDonnell, Martin, Smith (C). Int: Ackers, Lisone, Goudemand, Nicholson-Watton.

St Helens (40)
Tries: Jack Welsby 2, Thomas Makinson, Daryl Clark, Curtis Sironen, Moses Mbye, Sione Mata'utia
Goals: Mark Percival 6/7

Leeds Rhinos (10)
Tries: Ash Handley, Luis Roberts
Goals: Rhyse Martin 1/2

Leeds Rhinos' head coach, Rohan Smith, faced open dissent amongst the travelling Rhinos faithful, as his side slumped to another heavy defeat. A vocal section of the Leeds crowd were chanting for Smith to be sacked at the end of the game as Leeds' season threatens to come off the rails. Saints, on the other hand, were good value for their win as they look to keep up with Super League's leading pack.

Leeds actually took the lead early on, with winger Ash Handley scoring another try-of-the-season contender. The Rhinos chipped over the top deep in their own half, with Handley catching the kick and racing deep into the Saints half. He was tackled but received the ball from the resulting tackle and touched down in the corner. But that was as good as it got for the Rhinos, as Saints dominated the rest of the contest.

Sione Mata'utia scored Saints' first try of the night after 21 minutes, after Curtis Sironon controversially had a try disallowed after 13 minutes. An error from Matt Frawley gave Saints the ball back. This allowed Mata'utia to take in a pass from Konrad Hurrell to score. Mark Percival kicked the extras to level the scores at 6-6.

Moses Mbye scored the next try of the game, right on the stroke of half-time, taking in a good offload to score from close range. Percival again kicked the goal, to give the Saints a narrow 12-6 lead at half-time, but the second half was a rout by the Saints. They needed just five minutes to open the score in the second half. Sironen offloaded to Clark near the line, and he dived over to score.

Lachie Miller than failed to deal with a towering kick from Lewis Dodd for the next Saints score. With the ball hanging in the Merseyside sky, Jack Welsby outjumped Miller to pick his pocket and extend Saints' lead. Percival made no mistake with either conversion. Leeds struck back through Luis Roberts after 58 minutes, but in reality, Leeds never looked like getting back in the game.

Saints had time to run in three more tries before full-time. First, Curtis Sironen crashed onto a pass to score from 10 metres out. Then, a brilliant Jack Welsby pass put Tommy Makinson in for his 200th try. Percival broke through in the 71st minute, before passing inside to Welsby to complete the scoring. Percival ended with six goals from a possible seven as the Saints won at a canter to return to the top of Super League.

Catalans Dragons 8 Warrington Wolves 16
Venue: Stade Gilbert Brutus, Perpignan

Date: Sat, 25th May.   Kickoff: 6:30 PM.   Halftime: 2-all.   Penalties: Catalans 6-4.   Referee: Chris Kendall.   Crowd: 9,440.

Catalans: Mourgue, Davies, Romano, Ikuvalu, Johnstone; Abdull, Fages; Navarrete, Da Costa, Bousquet, Sims, Sironen, Garcia (C). Int: Nikorima, Séguier, Satae, Dezaria.
Warrington: Dufty, Thewlis, King, Tai, Ashton; Williams (C), Drinkwater; Harrison, Walker, Vaughan, Nicholson, Fitzgibbon, Currie. Int: Philbin, Musgrove, Powell, Wood.

Catalans Dragons (8)
Tries: Tom Davies
Goals: Arthur Mourgue 2/2

Warrington Wolves (16)
Tries: George Williams, Matthew Ashton
Goals: Josh Thewlis 4/5

Sam Burgess' Warrington Wolves side underlined their title hopes with a famous win in the South of France. The Wire withstood a barrage of Catalans Dragons' pressure before showing their killer instinct to win a pulsating contest. The win keeps Warrington very much in the race for the Super League title race, ahead of two crucial games back-to-back against Wigan.

A tense first half passed by without either side registering a decisive blow. A penalty each, one for Arthur Mourgue, and one for Josh Thewlis, meant the two sides went in for half-time with the score at 2-2. However, an injury to Catalans hooker, Alrix Da Costa proved decisive, weakening the Dragons' attack, with forward, Ben Garcia filling in at nine for the rest of the game.

But the game came alive in the second half, thanks to some brilliance from Matt Dufty after 44 minutes.  Dufty got a quick play the ball near the Catalans line and threw a deft pass, allowing George Williams to score from close range. Brilliant defence from Warrington then denied Arthur Romano, with the referee deeming he was held up on the field and insufficient evidence for the video ref to overturn the decision and award the try.

A Thewlis penalty in the 53rd minute extended their lead, before Matty Ashton then scored the game's decisive try. A smart flick from centre, Toby King, got the ball to Ashton in space and he made no mistake, touching down in the corner. A try from Tom Davies in the 74th minute proved to be scant consolation for the Dragons, who lost ground in the race for the title. After a series of clunky performances, they need to find a way to improve in attack if they want to stay in the race for the title.

Salford Red Devils 6 Wigan Warriors 26
Venue: Salford Stadium, Barton-upon-Irwell

Date: Sun, 26th May.   Kickoff: 3:00 PM.   Halftime: Wigan 18-0.   Penalties: Salford 6-3.   Referee: Tom Grant.   Crowd: 4,087.

Salford: Brierley, Ryan, Macdonald, Lafai, Cross; Atkin, Sneyd; Singleton, Shorrocks, Wright, Stone, Watkins (C), Partington. Int: Foster, Hankinson, Mellor, Dudson.
Wigan: Field, Miski, Keighran, Wardle, Marshall; French, Smith; Cooper, O'Neill, Thompson, Nsemba, Farrell (C), Havard. Int: Mago, Leeming, Dupree, Hill.

Salford Red Devils (6)
Tries: Oliver Partington
Goals: Marc Sneyd 1/1

Wigan Warriors (26)
Tries: Bevan French, Adam Keighran, Bradley O'Neill, Junior Nsemba
Goals: Adam Keighran 5/5

Three first half tries from the Wigan Warriors ensured a comfortable victory against the Salford Red Devils. Wigan's victory means they stay level with Saints and Warrington at the top of the Super League table, having played a game less than their nearest rivals.

The Warriors only needed 10 minutes to open the scoring, as Adam Keighran went over to score. A break from Keighran provided support for a break from Abbas Miski to score. Keighran returned to kicking duties, and promptly kicked five from five, including four conversions and a penalty.

Young prospect, Junior Nsemba, scored his second Super League try of the season in the 16th minute. Nsemba barged over Marc Sneyd, showing all of his power, as he went over to score after a powerful run. Marc Sneyd received a green card after the incident, much to the chagrin of the Salford coaching staff.

Wigan took full advantage of Salford being a man down, through Brad O'Neill in the 24th minute. Brad O'Neill produced a powerful run to crash over, with his try being confirmed by the video referee. Keighran kicked all three conversions to give Wigan an 18-0 lead at half-time. Remarkably, Wigan produced a perfect half in possession, completing at 100% in a dominant display.

Former Wigan forward, Oliver Partington, scored Salford's only try of the half in the 46th minute, but Wigan were in complete control of the game. Keighran kicked a penalty to the 64th minute to extend Wigan's lead to 20-0.

Bevan French produced a moment of magic late in the game, going it alone from the base of the scrum to add Wigan's final score of the night in the 78th minute, with Keighran kicking the extras to make the final score 26-8. Wigan's side was depleted by injury and suspension coming into the game. They produced a polished performance with a weakened side to keep up their title charge.

With two games against Warrington to come, first in the league, then in the Challenge Cup final, the Super League season is moving into its decisive weeks.

Tries: Niall Evalds 2, Sam Luckley 2, Jack Broadbent 2, Mikey Lewis 2, Dean Hadley, Peta Hiku, Matt Parcell
Goals: Mikey Lewis 9/10, Daniel Richardson 1/1

London Broncos produced the surprise result of the last Super League round, defeating Hull FC to claim their first victory of the season. However, there was to be no repeat of their heroics this week, as Hull KR produced a clinical display.

The Robins ran in 11 tries in their biggest victory of the season. London can be pleased with their second-half effort. At 46-0 down at halftime, there was a possibility that they may be on the wrong end of the heaviest-ever Super League defeat. However, they salvaged a modicum of pride with three second-half tries, losing the second half 18-14.

Hull KR were actually on the back foot in the opening exchanges. But that soon changed, as Jack Broadbent scored the first try of the game after six minutes, going over in the right corner after a good break from Matt Parcell. KR kicked 10 of 11 attempts at goal, with Mikey Lewis kicking the first nine, and Danny Richardson kicking KR's final conversion of the game.

Broadbent added his second, scoring in the same corner as his first effort. Niall Evalds was instrumental in both tries and Hull KR's next two, as they scored from four consecutive sets. Peta Hiku grabbed the third try of the game after 12 minutes. He ran onto a reverse flick pass from Evalds to crash over.

Evalds then scored the try of the game as KR passed the ball through six pairs of hands, after an initial break from Hiku. The ball arrived in Evalds' hands, and he ran over to score under the sticks.

KR extended their lead in the 19th minute, as Jesse Sue broke through before finding Parcell with an offload. After a relative try-scoring drought of 11 minutes, Rovers were in again as Dean Hadley barged over after taking in an underarm pass from Tryone May. Evalds got his second of the game after taking in a pass from Sam Luckley. Luckley then got on the scoresheet himself, charging through a one-on-one tackle to score, to give Hull KR a 46-0 lead at halftime.

London scored first in the first half after Tyrone May failed to field the kick-off. The Broncos then caught the Robins offside at the scrum and, after electing for another one, Alex Walker found a gap in the line to score. The Robins were not to be denied for long though, and soon had 50 points on the board. Luckley grabbed his second try of the game for another score from close range.

Eight minutes later, Mikey Lewis scored another KR try, starting and finishing a move himself. But London started to grow into the game, as KR's intensity admittedly dropped. A smart move through hands saw Illiess Macani go over to score for the Broncos.

Lewis added his second of the game, after providing good support to Jai Whitbread's strong carry, before London hit back with the final try of the game. Jarred Bassett went over, capitalising on a poor defensive read from Peta Hiku, to round off the scoring and consign London to an eleventh defeat of the season. With results going their way, Hull KR move up to fourth, going level on points with Catalans, and opening a two-point gap on Salford in sixth place.
