Robins end 45-year wait for cup success

Hull KR won 18- against Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final down at Wembley Stadium.

The Robins lifted the trophy for the first time in 45 years in a tense final against a star-studded Wolves line-up.

It was a fierce start to the final with Hull KR pair Jared Waerea-Hargraves and Joe Burgess both pinged for high tackles and warned by referee Liam Moore.

The Wolves thought they had drew first blood with strong defence. They seemed to force an error from Jack Broadbent but it was judged to be stripped.

The first points of the game came from the boot. Mikey Lewis was clipped high then the half dusted himself off to make it 2-0 for Hull KR.

Warrington would take a lead into half-time. Marc Sneyd produced a bouncing kick that fell right into the hands of Josh Thewlis to score in the corner.

The Robins needed a moment to get back into the final and Lewis provided with a wicked dropout which Arron Lindop batted over the sideline.

The Super League leaders threw everything they could at the Wolves but couldn't find a way past the Wolves defense.

It took until the last few minutes for their chance. Tyrone May punched a low kick on the slick surface and Tom Davies finished it off.

The score went up to the video referee Jack Smith and he gave the all clear. Lewis piloted the conversion over for 8-6 and had Hull KR within touching distance of the trophy.

Wolves were unable to regain the kick-off then the Robins saw out the last seconds and soaked up their first triumph in 45 years.

The Lance Todd Trophy went to Wolves spine player Marc Sneyd who became the second player after Sean Long to win the award three times.

Elliot Minchella became only the second Robins captain to lift the trophy after the late Roger Milwall.

Wigan women stop history in it's tracks

Wigan have defeated St Helens who were previously undefeated in the Challenge Cup over four seasons to claim the Women's Challenge Cup.

It was a tense start with both sides guilty of making errors and giving attacking opportunities to the other.

Wigan eventually cracked the scoring open twice in the opening 20 when some nice interchange of passing sent Megan Williams across before Mary Coleman busted through to score under the posts.

In the shadows of halftime, Emily Veivers busted through them to score and the Warriors held an 18-0 lead at the break.

Wigan burst onto the scoreboard when Isabel Rowe capped a great game with a show and go to nearly break the spirit St Helens hit back on the scoreboard in the second half when Katie Mottershead charged over to score and make the game really nervy.

But Wigan got there way just before the hour mark when Eva Hunter crashed over the line. It was a great pass which put the backrower through a yawning gap to score and run 35 metres untouched to put one hand on the cup.

Wigan sealed the deal with two quick tries thanks to Player of the Match Grace Banks and Anna Davies to break the spirit of the Saints and claim their first Women's Challenge Cup crown.
