Round 1: NRLW Broncos v Dragons preview

A new rugby league era kicks off in the Sunshine State.

After much conjecture about the teams granted a licence for the opening NRLW season, the Broncos and, somewhat controversially, the Dragons, will get their campaigns underway at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon before their male counterparts battle in an NRL elimination final.

The pair have had very different lead-ups to the inaugural premiership season, with the Dragons having no meaningful pre-season fixtures, while Brisbane were able to face off against the Jillaroos' northern neighbours - the PNG Orchids - in a trial last weekend prior to the final round NRL clash between Brisbane and Manly.

Brisbane didn't waste any time acquiring talent either, with 11 of the 21 named boasting rep experience, headed up by Jillaroos half Ali Brigginshaw. The Dragons aren't without their own rich talent, fullback Sam Bremner and second-rower Kezie Apps are household names among Women's Rugby League followers from their state and international exploits.

Who to watch: The fullbacks for this one have already met at Origin level and will be keen to reacquaint themselves with some open backline play. Brisbane's Chelsea Baker looks likely to assume goalkicking duties. For the Dragons, Sam Bremner was impressive for the Blues in that inaugural Origin, setting up a key try for her state.

Match notes: All seven NRLW season matches including the Grand Final will be broadcast on Nine, Fox and Live Pass. Gates at Suncorp open at 1:30pm before the game gets underway at 1:45pm, with the NRL match afterwards starting just after 4pm.

My tip: Brisbane's rep experience is the key for this one. The Dragons lack of preparation could work against them, despite the class in their 17. Broncos.
