Round 25 - Leichhardt Oval, Lilyfield / Wanngal - Crowd: 16055

Match Overview

In a stunning reversal of fortunes, the North Queensland Cowboys mounted an extraordinary comeback to defeat the Wests Tigers 34-28 at Leichhardt Oval, with the result knocking the hosts out of finals contention.

The Cowboys' victory was an exhibition of late-game resilience, as they overcame a significant deficit in the second half to snatch a dramatic win in front of a heartbroken home crowd.

The game started brightly for the visitors, with the Cowboys striking early through tries from Jeremiah Nanai and Semi Valemei, taking a quick 10-0 lead.

However, the Tigers responded with a ferocity that showcased their determination. Tries from Taylan May and a remarkable first-half double from fullback Jahream Bula completely swung the momentum, with the Tigers heading into the sheds with a hard-earned 16-10 advantage.

The second half seemed to follow the script of a dominant Tigers performance. While the Cowboys levelled the scores early through a Tom Dearden try, the Tigers' potent attack quickly regained control.

Jahream Bula completed his hat-trick with another four-pointer, and tries from Brent Naden and Apiasi Koroisau pushed the Tigers' lead to a commanding 28-16 with less than 20 minutes to play. The home fans were in full voice, and victory seemed assured.

But the Cowboys, refusing to surrender, began to claw their way back. A crucial try from Braiden Burns ignited the comeback, with Scott Drinkwater's ensuing conversion narrowing the margin to just six points.

The shift in momentum was palpable, and with just minutes remaining, Jaxon Purdue finished a superb play to tie the scores at 28-all after Drinkwater slotted the conversion.

In a thrilling final act, the Cowboys sealed the win with a decisive late try that saw them leap to a 34-28 lead. The final whistle sounded shortly after, leaving the Tigers and their fans devastated as their finals aspirations came to a heartbreaking end.

With both teams able to book September holidays, each will flow through the remaining two rounds looking to salvage some pride. The Tigers visit the Raiders in the capital next week before heading up to Robina to face the last-placed Titans; while the Cowboys host arch-rivals Brisbane in Townsville and enjoy the final-round bye to end the season.
