North Queensland Cowboys produced a stirring late fightback to defeat the Brisbane Broncos 35-31 in a pulsating NRL clash at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
In front of 45,582 fans, the match swung repeatedly before Heilum Luki's try two minutes from full-time sealed a memorable win for the visitors.
The Broncos struck first through Kotoni Staggs in the fifth minute after a strong Payne Haas carry bent the Cowboys' line. Thomas Duffy grubbered into the in-goal and Staggs cleaned up to score, with the halfback converting for a 6-0 lead. Brisbane looked in control early, but the momentum shifted sharply when Patrick Carrigan was sin-binned for a heavy tackle on Tom Chester.
North Queensland took full advantage. Jaxon Purdue levelled the scores with a brilliant 70-metre effort after Scott Drinkwater sparked the play from deep. Zac Laybutt then crossed in the corner following a long cut-out pass from Drinkwater, before Soni Luke darted over from dummy-half with a sharp solo try under the posts. The Cowboys had raced to a 16-6 lead midway through the first half.
The Broncos responded with a sharp left-side play finished by Josiah Karapani, and Jesse Arthars added another just before the break with a well-timed run off Pat Carrigan. Duffy converted both to keep Brisbane within striking distance, trailing 24-18 at half-time after a late Cowboys try to Drinkwater following good work from Heilum Luki and Tom Dearden.
The second half opened at the same frantic pace. Ezra Mam finished off a spectacular kick-and-chase sequence to level the scores at 24-all, sending the Suncorp crowd into voice. Brisbane then edged ahead through Ben Talty after a neat short ball from Duffy, although the period was not without controversy with several bunker decisions frustrating the Cowboys.
North Queensland refused to fold. Tom Chester powered through on the left to score after an end-to-end movement, and Jake Clifford converted to tie the match again at 30-30 with 14 minutes remaining. The closing stages became a rare shootout as both sides opted for field goals. Duffy calmly slotted one to nudge Brisbane ahead, only for Drinkwater to respond moments later from 30 metres to square things once more at 31-all.
With the tension peaking, the Cowboys delivered the decisive blow. Dearden sliced through the middle and, when Drinkwater was denied space, the ball was shifted left where Clifford engaged the line and sent Luki crashing over beside the posts. Clifford narrowly missed the conversion from the sideline, but the four-pointer proved enough.
The Broncos forced a missed kick-off and threatened late, yet the Cowboys' defence held firm to close out a dramatic contest. It was a high-quality, end-to-end match that showcased attacking flair from both sides, with North Queensland showing resilience and composure when it mattered most.
The match was an NRL 'scorigami' - the 35-31 scoreline that has never occured prior to today in the 118-year history of the game in Australia.
