Brisbane Broncos v Wests Tigers

The Wests Tigers and Broncos put on a brilliant spectacle in a fast moving, expansive and tight contest which was decided in the last minute - the visitors coming away 22-16 winners thanks to the heroics of Michael Chee Kam.

The game got off to a flying start when the Broncos exploited the Tigers short side when Bird linked with Staggs, who shifted it onto Isaako, who then ran down the right wing, grubbered back infield and Gillett regathered to fall over the line and score. Isaako added the extras and the Broncos lead 6-0 after 3 minutes.

In the 18th minute the Tigers almost equalised when Brooks switched direction, passed to Farah who then got a great ball to Jennings with the try line wide open, but Jennings dropped the ball.

Three minutes later, the Broncos received a penalty at the other end and Isaako added another 2 points.

From the restart the Broncos stormed downfield and on the last, they made a break down the left wing through Oates who drew the defender and then selflessly passed back infield to Bird who knocked the ball on with the try line 5 metres away and no one near him.

The next set saw the Tigers on attack. Farah put in a heavy chip and Masters fumbled the catch and another try went begging.

With 4 minutes left in the half, the Broncos were again denied a try when the video ref found that Fifita, who chased through a grubber, bobbled the ball and knocked it on as he tried to score.

With 2 minutes left in the half, the Tigers finally got on the board when Brooks kicked to the left side and Chee Kam took the catch and then, while in a 4 man tackle, somehow managed to offload to Garner and the backrower fell over the line for a try. Marster converted to reduce the deficit to 2 at the break.

Five minutes into the second half and the Broncos had a try denied by the video ref due to a decoy runner impeding the Tigers defence. 3 minutes later Marsters kicked a penalty goal at a difficult angle to level the scores.

From the restart the Tigers again got themselves into good position. Thompson batted a kick back to Brooks who then headed towards the line before dishing one-handed ball back inside to Eisenhuth who scored under the posts. Marsters made no mistake with the conversion.

On the hour, the Tigers short kicking game was on point and produced two repeat sets. The Broncos attempted a short drop out, but the wall went over the sideline on the full and Marsters kicked the gift two pointer from right in front.

In the 65th minute, Nikorima pulled out a great play to keep the Broncos in the game. After sticking his nose through the line, he passed to Fifita, who drew the defender and then offloaded back inside to Nikorima who ran 30m to score under the posts. Isaako converted.

Three minutes later Isaako added a penalty goal to level the scores.

Then, with 90 seconds remaining, the Tigers were set for a field goal, but the defence rushed them, the ball went to Chee Kam who was looking to pass to someone, then he dummied, put on a step and ran 30m to score an unbelievable try. Marsters converted after the siren and the Tigers packed their bags for home, having pulled off a brilliant victory.
