Tigers show bite in shock upset win

Castleford has pulled off a massive upset downing league leaders St Helens 30-10 in a comprehensive home display before a boisterous crowd at the Jungle.

Saints played seven debutants and the lack of experience showed in the opening stages as they conceded in the very first minute of play when Jason Qareqare burst down the left touchline from inside his own half to score a sensational individual try.

For much of the first half, the rookie Saints held their own, but the resistance began to crack just before half-time when the Saints conceded two tries in the space of fifteen minutes in the lead up to the change of ends. Darrel Olpherts and Jake Trueman crossed just before the break to put Castleford up 14-0 at half-time.

After the break, Olpherts crossed for his double and it was beginning to look ominous for the Saints. But credit to their young brigade of rookies for staying in the fight, they were rewarded just before the hour mark when Jumah Sambou crossed on debut for the Saints. They even sniffed an upset when James Bell crossed just four minutes later to reduce the gap to eight points. But that would be the last time St Helens made an imprint on the scorecard. Two late tries to Joe Westerman and Mahe Fonua in the sixty-seventh and seventy-second minute respectively sealed the deal for the home side.

Olympique take it to the Rhinos

Leeds came from behind to pick up their second Betfred Super League win of the season as they ran out 25-14 winners over fellow strugglers Toulouse at Headingly.

Toulouse got off to the perfect start crossing inside the opening twenty minutes when Paul Marcon crossed following a well-placed cross-field kick to take the early advantage. Leeds hit back with a double whammy just before half-time.

Firstly through a lovely ball which sent James Donaldson away to level the scores at 6-6. Then Brad Dwyer crossed right on half-time off a dummy and ran it round next to the posts for a 12-6 advantage.

Leeds struck first again after the break when Tom Briscoe crossed with a spectacular finish in the right corner. A Rhyse Martin penalty goal extended the margin out to 12. Kruise Leeming potted over a drop goal to give Leeds a healthy cushion. Toulouse hit back when Matty Russell crossed reducing the margin to nine points, but it was in vain.

Brad Dwyer sealed his double and the result nine minutes from time, Junior VaiVai crossed to reduce the margin, which might be helpful when it comes to for and against. They've got Corey Norman coming soon which will help with their attack.

Wolves maul Giants in comprehensive display

Warrington Wolves have taken down the Huddersfield Giants in a convincing performance winning by 22 points.

The points flowed for Warrington after a tense opening, fullback Josh Thewlis crossed for the first of his three tries after twelve minutes which saw Oliver Wilson given a yellow card for the Giants. It came off a short charge out of dummy half. Thewlis grabbed a second just on the twentieth minute when he reached out to cross for the Wolves and established a ten-point lead.

Toby King crossed on the half-hour mark which gave Warrington a sixteen point advantage, Warrington would pot over a penalty goal to take it out to a three converted try lead. Innes Senior kept Huddersfield in the match just before the break when he finished off a set play and the margin was 14 at halftime. Connor Wrench crossed out wide finishing off a well-worked set play which stripped the Giants short of numbers on their left-hand side.

A clever grubber saw Thewlis complete his hat-trick just past the hour mark to extend the margin to 24 points before backrower Ben Currie ran the perfect line to extend the margin to 28. Luke Yates bagged a consolation try for the Giants, but it would only help out in the for and against for the visitors.

Rovers march on in convincing victory

Hull KR have continued Wakefield's woes, smashing their rivals' 32-10 in their head to head encounter in Round 10 of the Super League season. Rovers also extend their winning streak to four.

It was Rovers who got the scoring underway when Kane Linnett crossed for the first of his two tries just after the opening ten minutes finishing off a line-break from Lachlan Coote. Coote crossed for his own try just eight minutes later, running through a vacant gap in the Wakefield defence and Rovers had a 12-0 lead. Five minutes from time, Shaun Kenny-Dowall crossed when he outmuscled several Wildcats to slam the football down and Rovers took a commanding 16 point advantage into the dressing sheds.

After the break, Rovers continued from where they left off when Ethan Ryan crossed five minutes into the second half. Ryan completed a quickfire double minutes later when he kicked ahead and won the race for the ball, giving Rovers a 24-0 lead.

Wakefield put together a consolation try when Jacob Miller scrambled on a loose ball and ran it around under the posts reducing the margin to 18 points. Lewis Murphy crossed with just a tick under 15 minutes to go to make the score-line competitive at 14 points. Two late Rover tries to Ryan Hall and Kane Linnett extended the margin out to 22 points which allowed Hull KR to continue on their winning ways while Wakefield drop three straight games.

Jai Field makes his mark as Wigan scrapes past Red Devils

A last-minute miracle try from Jai Field saw Wigan record a 30-24 Super League victory over Salford in a thrilling encounter at the DW Stadium.

Field was the man responsible for getting Wigan on the scoreboard after the opening five minutes when he blitzed the Devils defence for the opening try. Smith's conversion gave them an early cushion of six points.

Salford hit back swiftly when they nabbed two quick tries in the space of six minutes. The first came when King Vuniyayawa crashed over the top of three Wigan defenders to tie the game up at six all. Six minutes later, Matt Costello crossed when he finished off a play down the left which saw him take a wonderful Ryan Brierley offload and the Red Devils led by 6.

Then Wigan came into their own scoring three tries in the space of 11 minutes. First Kaide Ellis crossed after Brad O'Neill delivered a wonderful ball for Ellis to race onto and touch down. Smith converted to make it 12 all. Liam Farrell crossed minutes later after supporting his halfback Cade Cust on a long bust downfield. To wrap up the Wigan raid, Smith broke through some interesting attempts at defence to score Wigan's fourth before converting to lead 24-12 at half-time.

Salford started the better team in the second stanza. Their efforts were rewarded when Alex Gerrard grounded a wonderful grubber kick from half-back Brodie Croft which reduced the deficit to just six points. Seven minutes later, Ken Sio tied the game at 24 apiece when he intercepted a Cust pass and ran the best part of 80 meters to score untouched. With just under 5 to play, Jai Field sealed the game with an impressive solo try, when he ran 80 meters untouched to seal the game for the home side.

Shocks continue as Hull upsets Catalans

Catalans have let a golden opportunity slip as Super League's round of shock results continued when Hull FC shocked Catalans by 14-8 in a Super League thriller. With St Helens' big defeat on Thursday night, it was a chance for the Dragons to potentially leapfrog the Saints, but it wouldn't be an easy task.

In a game dominated by defence, it would be clear that points would be at a premium and it was the home side that pounced on the first points when Jordan Lane crossed in the seventeenth minute to lead 6-0.

Josh Drinkwater went to the grubber kick which found his winger Fouad Yaha who crossed for yet another try off a Drinkwater kick to trail by just two.

Chris Satae landed a crucial blow just before the break when he crashed over against some deplorable Catalans defence who sat back and allowed the big fella to stroll over the try line and extend Hull's lead to 8 points.

A Jake Connor penalty goal extended the lead to ten just at half-time.

Catalans would score the only try of the second half. Mitchell Pearce took the ball to the line with just over ten minutes to play and was rewarded by the video ref when he was ruled to have grounded the ball in the in-goal. Unfortunately, Catalans couldn't breach the Hull line again as Hull hung on for the upset victory.
