Parramatta Eels v Gold Coast Titans Sunday 6:15pm at CommBank Stadium, Parramatta / Burramattagal

Sunday evening NRL action heads to Parramatta where the Eels with their origin stars back will be looking to wipe last week's thrashing from their minds with a clash against the Titans who themselves are smarting after a brutal loss.

The Eels have had a mixed season to say the very least sitting down in 7th spot on the ladder with 9 wins and 8 losses. The Blue and Gold have pulled off some remarkable wins but at the same time have had some tough losses including last week at the hands of the Warriors.

Last weekend, the Eels suffered a humiliating 46-10 defeat at home to the Warriors. Admittedly, the Eels were severely understrength but there were plenty of good players out there that underperformed considering.

All three Origin players are expected to back-up for the Eels. Clint Gutherson's return to Fullback sees Sean Russell revert to the wing. Ryan Matterson moves to the bench from the halves.

If anything sums up the Titans it's inconsistency and 2023 has been no different for the Gold Coast. The Titans sit 11th on the ladder with 7 wins but easily could be sitting top 5 or 6 if they found consistency even in just one game.

Last weekend, the Titans suffered one of the toughest losses possible with a 23-21 Golden Point loss to the Dolphins at home. The Gold Coast gave up yet another half-time lead to fall behind before forcing it to golden point. The deciding factor was a correct penalty call by Grant Atkins ruling Erin Clark offside and the simple penalty goal consigned the Titans to defeat.

Like the Eels, all 4 of the Titans Origin stars are likely to back-up which is needed with the side losing Joe Stimson and Jaimin Joliffe to injury. The returns also see Jayden Campbell return to the bench.

Last meeting: Round 10 2023 - Titans 26 Eels 24

Who to watch: Returning from injury last week, Shaun Lane was having a big impact on the Parramatta side prior to injury and was considered a shoe in for Origin as well. The size and ball playing ability of Lane will be a big part of the Eels finals charge.

There is a lot of speculation around the contract of David Fifita but coming off Origin, the Titans big man is set to make a big impact. Everybody knows the skills of Fifita but he needs to put them forward if the Titans want to win.

Favourite: The Eels are heavy favourites for a clash that at times has been historically close.

My tip: This is a game where I'd say an upset wouldn't shock me and it doesn't, but I think Parramatta would have too much power and guile over the Titans and get an important win. Eels by 8.
