Robins railroad Wolves to claim GF berth

with Justin Davies

Hull KR won 10-8 against Warrington Wolves in their game at Sewell Group Craven Park on Friday night.

The Robins were the first side to book their spot in the Grand Final at Old Trafford next Saturday night.

In front of a capacity crowd, Hull KR flew out of the blocks and the energy was high from the opening hit up.

Hull KR had the first chance of the game. Dean Hadley drove towards the line but was held up by the Wolves defense.

They were able to strike with their next chance. The ball was shifted to the right and James Batchelor activated the go-go gadget arms to stretch out.

Warrington thought they had fired back through Matt Dufty. The fullback sliced through and touched down but it was chalked off for obstruction.

The hosts extended their advantage to 10-0 before half-time. Joe Burgess snuck into dummy half and crawled over.

It was judged a four-pointer by the on-field referee and there was insufficient evidence to overturn the decision against Burgess.

The Wolves needed to find something after the break and Matty Ashton provided. The winger scooted over on last for 10-4.

Warrington went back to the well to get themselves back within two points. Another sweep down the left found Ashton to dive over.

It was a busy night for the video referee, who was called upon again but Ashton had another stylish winger putdown.

Josh Thewlis had the opportunity to level the game but swung his conversion away as goal kicking was the difference in a tight contest.

The visitors threw everything at Hull KR to snatch the game but Hull KR held firm to record the  famous win.

The countdown from the raucous home crowd was loud and saw Hull KR earn the first spot in the Super League Grand Final.

It has been a strong first season for Warrington Wolves under the stewardship of Sam Burgess and they will be chomping at the bit for next season.

Walters answers SOS as Wigan make 13th grand final

with AJ Lucantonio

The Wigan Warriors have made their second successive grand final after a 32-0 rout of the Leigh Leopards.

It was a tight start to the game as both sides jostled for field position. Leigh however have been running low on the energy bar as they've had to win out just to make the finals.

The Warriors started in fine fashion after 11 minutes. A well worked set play out to the left saw Harry Smith, Bevan French and Jai Field combine to send Liam Marshall on his way for the first try of the contest. Nine minutes later some disappointing edge defence allowed late inclusion Sam Walters to use his strength to ground the ball to make it 10-0.

Adam Keighran added a gift two points after Abbas Miski took an intercept. As Leigh scrambled to get back onside, the referee pinned Leigh for offside and the penalty goal made it 12-0. A well worked movement before the half saw more success for the Warriors as Marshall had a second and Leigh were in major trouble at the break.

The second half started disastrously for Leigh when Aaron Pene lost the ball off the first carry of the half. A lovely pass from French sent Walters away and Wigan had one hand on a grand final birth.

Keighran added a penalty goal after another offside call gave Wigan a 26-0 lead. French scored a cracking individual try to make it 32-0 on the hour mark. He got the ball from a standing start, skipped and danced before kicking for himself to score. Jai Field added further salt into the wound as Wigan completed the rout.
