Ownership questions continue as McDonnell has a party!

The Salford Red Devils 2025 season from hell has continued to get worse following a 28-0 thrashing at the hands of the Leeds Rhinos.

The game did start disastrously for Leeds when Keenan Palasia was sin-binned following a high tackle on fullback Chris Atkin. Salford failed to crack the defence and were guilty of overtrying throughout the game with several Jayden Nikorima raids unable to be converted.

After a dour opening quarter of the contest, eventually the Salford defence cracked when James McDonnell crossed for the first of his four tries after 22 minutes. Lachie Miller added a penalty goal to make it 6-0 at the break.

For how brave Salford defended in the first half, their defence to open the second half was disappointing conceding two tries in the opening ten minutes of the half. McDonnell crossed for both of them to cap off a hattrick, the first came off a good break from Ryan Hall, who kicked inside for McDonnell to score. A few moments later, another kick, this time from Jake Connor sat up perfectly for the Irishmen to score his third.

Leeds didn't have it all their own way when Mikolaj Oledzki was sin-binned for a high tackle. They didn't concede despite Salford having several chances. When the dust settled, Leeds added two tries to send the scoreline at 28-0. A clever Morgan Gannon grubber kick sat up perfectly for Miller to slide over, while McDonnell's fourth try came from a great pass from Connor.

Before the game, Salford CEO Chris Irwin was interviewed on the club's financial situation which has cast an ugly cloud over the Super League season. In that came the startling admission that "Their interest (owners) is the stadium and the land around it. They're looking to put a hotel on grounds and an indoor sport arena. We will get 20% of the stadium (sale) as a club, and that will give us more protection than we've ever had before, so we'll access those funds at that point." - AJ

Warriors clip Robins wings

Wigan Warriors won 28-12 against leaders Hull KR down at Sewell Group Craven Park on Friday night.

The Warriors recorded back-to-back wins which has them third in the Super League competition and broke the Robins unbeaten start to the season.

It was Hull KR who struck first in the contest. A smooth backline move ended with Joe Burgess diving over in the corner.

Wigan showed off their skill to score from anywhere for 6-all. It was a scrum near their line which Bevan French helped open up before Zach Eckersley streaked away.

The Robins retook the lead after ad-lib football. They kept the ball alive then Peta Hiku finished off the move for 12-6.

They thought they might have extended their lead after the break. Joe Burgess touched down from a grubber but the video referee judged it no try.

That gave Wigan Warriors a lift and they never looked back. Jai Field slipped a pass for Jake Wardle who paced away to bring them within two.

Next, it was their halfback maestro that handed Wigan the lead. Harry Smith threw in a step to fool the defense and go over.

The combination of Field and French helped extend their advantage. French scooped up a loose pass then found the trailing Field to run away.

Abbas Miski put the icing on the cake from some horrendous Robins passing. He was able to power to the line and touch down for 28-12. - Justin

Saints march past Trinity

St Helens won 26-14 against Wakefield Trinity down at Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday night.

The Saints bounced back with a dominant first half display which put them in complete control of the contest at 20-nil.

Their first score came from Morgan Knowles picking up the scraps after a kick and bouncing over from close range.

Next, it was a lovely move on the left which saw George Whitby double pump before he found Matt Whitley to score.

Curtis Sironen started the third try with a late offload which allowed the Saints to stretch it right and find Harry Robertson in the corner.

The Saints added a pair of penalty goals due to offside calls in the first half that gave them a commanding 20-nil lead going into the sheds.

It was more of the same in the second half. Jack Welsby launched a kick that James Bell threw over his head to a fortunate Whitley to get his second.

Trinity did get on the board in the second stanza. A flowing move released Tom Johnstone who found Oliver Pratt to slide over.

They continued to chance their hand and it offered up a second four-pointer. This time, Mason Lino finished off the move.

Josh Rourke sliced through, kicked ahead and it was a superb catch from Pratt who scooped it up for his second. - Justin

Away bandits strike again as questions linger on Wire

Hull FC have continued an unbelievable away record to start 2025, with a 28-16 over the high-flying Warrington Wolves.

The black and whites opened the scoring in a ruthless first half after just 11 minutes. From the scrum, a shift to the right edge saw Jordan Rapana go to the line and linkup with Tom Briscoe to score in the right corner. Four minutes later, a crossfield kick from Cade Cust was put down by Warrington and Davy Litten was able to slide over. Briscoe completed his double midway through the half with a spectacular finish in the corner.

Herman Ese'ese continued his try-scoring form for a front-rower when he charged over under the sticks to give the visitors a 20-0 lead. Warrington did get one back before the break when George Williams busted through some shaky edge defence to score in the corner.

But it got worse for the Wire before the break as Litten crossed to complete his try-scoring doubles as he kicked for himself, Matt Dufty went missing and the centre crossed for a 24-4 lead at the break.

After the resumption, Warrington were easily the better side and were buoyed by a sin bin to Jack Ashworth for a late tackle. The hosts quickly took full advantage of the extra man as Josh Thewlis crossed for his first try of the campaign. Matty Ashton got a quick fire double after the hour mark but goal kicking proved to be a problem. The usually reliable Marc Sneyd missed all four shots at goal and what could've been a tied game was an eight point game.

A late penalty on the buzzer allowed Will Pryce to knock over the extras and give Hull FC outright second place on the Super League table. - AJ

Classy Leigh account for Cas

The Leigh Leopards have showed their class in a 20-6 verdict over Castleford in a dour struggle at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle.

The hosts couldn't have started the game any worse with Daejarn Asi kicked off out on the full. Their middle defence was then gashed by Robbie Mulhearn who broke straight through some poor defence. On the next play, Edwin Ipape darted from dummy half to score a fairly soft try.

Matters got worse when George Lawler was sin-binned for a dangerous throw on a Leigh player, outside of a penalty goal, Castleford's defence hung on. However, just before the break Darnell McIntosh scored in the corner following a great cutout pass from Gareth O'Brien to lead by 12 at the break.

Straight after the resumption, Leigh broke away down the sideline to give themselves great attacking field position. A quick shift out to the left this time saw Bailey Hodgson go over after great bit of shape from Lachie Lam. Eight minutes later, another shift out to the right edge for McIntosh to get a second try.

Castleford's night got worse when Sylvester Namo was binned for a high tackle to Hodgson. At the end of the game, the Tigers got a late try when an Asi crossfield kick was taken spectacularly by Zac Cini to score their first try of the contest, but it came too late. - AJ

Dragons out point Giants

The Dragons have started to find their groove this season after a slow start which has them down in ninth place, downing the Giants 38-18.

Huddersfield hit the scoreboard first. Jacob Gagai kept his legs pumping before he stretched out to score.

Catalans opened their account from the boot. Luke Keary dabbed through a kick and Tariq Sims latched onto it for 6-all.

The visitors surged to the front from a set play. It ended with Leo Darellatour going over in the left corner on debut.

It was judged an eight-point try which saw Giants Sam Hewitt go to the bin then Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet piloted over a penalty goal for 14-6 at the break.

The Dragons picked up where they left off in the second half with the advantage. Julian Bousquet got a fortunate bounce to score then Bayley Sironen sliced through.

Jake Bibby pulled one back for the Giants. He was on hand from a George Flanagan kick to touch down.

The visitors kept them at arm's length with some expansive football. They kept it alive through Darrelatour then Paul Seguier dove over.

Huddersfield Giants kept fighting in the second half. Sam Halsall flew highest from another Flanagan kick for 32-18.

The last word in the game went to the Dragons though. Tavita Pangai-Junior muscled his way from close range. - Justin
