Brisbane Broncos v St George Illawarra Dragons

The Broncos struck first when a scrumbase play allowed Ezra Mam to beat Kyle Flanagan and pick up a try assist to Gehamat Shibasaki with a rather suspect offload. And Mam soon was involved again, when he caught a bullet pass from Adam Reynolds, stepped twice and went over himself to make it a 12-0 lead.

A bomb from Kyle Flanagan landed in the hands of Tyrell Sloan, and while initially it was called as a knock on while he grounded the ball, but a potential penalty for a mid air collision with Jesse Arthars, the bunker found he just simply grounded the ball and scored a try. Valentine Holmes missed the conversion and it was 12-4 at half time.

Almost immediately into the second half the Dragons hit back when they knocked over a penalty goal, but the Broncos picked up one of their own when Jaydn Su'a was sin binned for a professional foul. But down to 12 men, the Dragons hit the front - first Gutherson scoring with an old fashioned wrap around play, then Jacob Liddle pouncing on a loose ball and running 80 metres to give the Dragons an 18-14 lead.

The Broncos retook the lead minutes later, when Mam again turned Flanagan around before he found Kotoni Staggs in support for another try. But the Dragons again scored twice more, first a play which saw at least 10 players touch the ball before Sloan scored in the corner, and then Gutherson snuck in on a scrumbase play to give the Red V what seemed to be a secure 30-22 lead with three and a half minutes remaining

But Brisbane refuses to die, and after recovering the short kick off they marched down to the goal line before Mam found Arthars for a try in the corner to make it a one possession game. And when a pair of penalties brought the Broncos to the goal line with a minute left, there was an expectation almost they'd score again. But a diabolical set in attack let the Dragons escape with the two points.

There was down note to the victory however, with boom back rower Dylan Egan feared to have torn his ACL in the opening minutes of the contest
