History broken as Leigh win at Saints for first time in 43 years

The Leigh Leopards have broken a 43-year hoodoo when they defeated St Helens by 16-4 at Totally Wicked Stadium.

It was a rough first half for both sides, playing possession football and having limited attacking opportunities. The attacking chances were limited to a bounced ball by Owen Dagnall over the line. The only points of the second half were two Gareth O'Brien penalties goals to give Leigh a 4-0 lead at the break.

The second half was all the Leopards with Joe Ofahengaue crashing over for two tries. The first was an individual effort just on the hour mark. A great inside ball from O'Brien put the big import through, crashing over the top of several defenders for the opening try of the game.

His second came from a kick that wasn't defused by Kyle Feldt. The Saints were sloppy getting to the loose ball and it was Ofahengaue who charged across for his second try of the contest. Desperate to not be nilled for the first time in Super League history (as a franchise), Harry Robertson went across in the dying moments to cross for nothing more than consolation.

Wakefield run riot against hapless Giants

After a second half collapse against Hull FC last weekend, it was a more complete performance by Wakefield as they dismantled a hapless Huddersfield Giants.

Huddersfield opened the scoring early when Jacob Gagai finished off a movement in the opening five minutes to give the home crowd some early hope. Jayden Myers answered back quickly for the visitors when he picked up a Jake Trueman bomb to give Wakefield an early 6-4 lead. This was doubled when Mason Lino dug into the line with a Harbour Bridge pass to Lachlan Walmsley to score.

Lino's pass selection was again on-point midway through the half when he put Mike McMeekan through a gaping hole to cross and it was 18-4. With 13 to play in the half, the footwork of Corey Hall on the right edge was too much for the Giants defence to take and he slammed it down. Myers capped off a terrific first half for Trinity when he picked up an attempted intercept from the Giants to dive over and the gap was 24 points at the break.

Like the first half, Huddersfield opened the scoring in the second stanza. A nice movement down the left involving Matt Frawley and Tui Lolohea sent Adam Swift flying in the corner to give the Giants a sniff. That chance was short lived as Wakefield crossed for three second half tries to cement a 36 point victory and keep pace with the top 6. Max Jowitt (SL's leading point-scorer) added to his tally when he crossed after 54 minutes before tries to Cam Scott and Josh Griffin put the game beyond doubt.

Edgell hattrick has Leeds on track

A hattrick to Alfie Edgell has guided the Leeds Rhinos to a dominant second half performance against a determined Salford Red Devils at Headingley.

Leeds didn't have it all their own way in the first half with Salford proving a tough nut to crack in the opening 40 minutes. By the 18 minute mark, pressure had to eventually lead to points and it was a lofted Lachie Miller pass that sent Edgell sprinting over in the corner. The young winger had a double three minutes later in an amazing backline movement that went through at minimum, a half dozen set of hands before the winger put it down.

Salford responded with their lone try of the game when the inspirational Ryan Brierley chipped over the top and won the race to the ball. The Red Devils were close to a second when rugby import Declan Murphy blasted his way through the defence, but the try was pulled back for obstruction and we stayed at 10-6 heading into the break.

It was once again the Miller show heading out of the break with an individual piece of brilliance to get the score to 16-6. The game's turning point came 11 minutes into the second half when Matty Foster was sin-binned for a professional foul. Edgell finished off his hattrick within seconds of Foster's departure and the floodgates opened.

Salford would concede two further tries in the sin-bin period. The first coming to Harry Newman when he finished another extravagant team try as the Rhinos refused to die wondering with ball in hand. James McDonnell followed suit on the hour mark, hitting a great hole to burst his way across. Former Knight and Norths Devils forward Cooper Jenkins put icing on the cake with a try in the dying moments to seal a comprehensive victory.

Hail Sezer as Wigan's rugby wonderboy becomes nightmare!

Aidan Sezer has led Hull FC to an emphatic victory over Wigan as question marks over rugby star Christian Wade's adaptation to rugby league were laid for all to see.

Hull FC opened the scoring inside the opening 15 minutes when a Sezer bomb was spilt by Wade into the arms of Jed Cartwright to score the opening try. Seven minutes later, the former Tigers half split the Wigan left edge before unloading to Cartwright to cross for his second try.

In the shadows of half-time, the visitors continued their rampage when a flat pass from dummy half sent Sezer over under the sticks. The halfback was having the half of his career and it was exactly what the black and whites needed to lead 18-0 at half-time as they looked to reverse last week's collapse.

A penalty goal after the break left Wigan down by four possessions and they needed to hit back and quickly. On the hour mark, Wade made up for his error riddled half when he finished off a slick backline movement. The former rugby international and NFL running back crossed with an individual effort similar to those of Martin Offiah back in the 90's hey day.

Wade's joy was short lived, spilling a bomb with 15 minutes to go which ended up in the arms of Jordan Rapana to score. Wigan did finish up with a consolation try when Ethan Havard bust through a gap to score. But it was Hull who scored the last points of the game, Jack Ashworth squeezed through a gap in the Warriors defence to ground the ball.

Rovers run riot over despondent Catalans

Hull KR have rebounded following two disappointing performances with a 28-point victory over a directionless Catalans Dragons side.

After being defeated by 62 points at Craven Park, the pressure was placed back on Catalans in the early moments. A clever Tyrone May wriggled out of some despondent defence before finding Jack Broadbent to score the opening try after 12 minutes.

With just under 15 minutes to go, the returning Mikey Lewis nearly led to a second Rovers try, but Peta Hiku bombed an absolute sitter. But, the Rovers didn't need to worry it with under 10 to play in the half. A Sam Luckley offload sent the 2024 Man of Steel over to score and it was a two-possession lead. Catalans did well to repel the Rovers attack before the break with two claims from Lewis being denied by the video referee.

After the break, Rovers continued to pile on the pressure and it was a lovely movement along the left edge that sent Joe Burgess flying towards the corner to make it 18-0. Hull KR continued to force pressure and it was Broadbent who finished the move off in the corner for his second try.

Catalans managed a consolation try when an Alrix Da Costa grubber was eventually picked up by Romain Navarrete to grab a try for the Dragons. Rovers managed two tries in the final ten minutes to rub some further salt into the wound, both off Catalans errors as Lewis finally completed his double along with Burgess to secure a comfortable 28-point win.

Upset places pressure on Burgess

Super League is the competition that keeps on giving as Castleford who were shamed by lowly Salford last week, defeated the highly inconsistent Warrington Wolves by 6 points.

The match started favourably for the visitors when Salford recruit Sam Stone crashed across on a terrific short pass from Ben Currie and the signs weren't great for the Tigers early. Six minutes later, the Tigers hit back swiftly when Daejarn Asi busted through three tackles to bring the Tigers back level.

Castleford would soon take the lead when George Lawler pursued an Asi grubber that wasn't grounded by the Wolves and won the race to the loose ball. Warrington hit back before half-time with a terrific movement down the left edge. Josh Thewlis was able to beat the cover defence to score and make it just a two point game at the break.

Wire started the second half with intent, but their execution left a lot to be desired. A penalty goal soon doubled the lead to four. This was soon added to when Josh Simm crossed for the Tigers to extend the game to two possessions.

But the game's fever pitch moment was soon to come. Thewlis was certain to score before a Alex Mellor high tackle, bizarrely, video referee Liam Rush didn't rule a penalty try and dispatched Mellor to the bin. Yet Warrington had hope again 90 seconds later when Stefan Ratchford nudged Innes Senior aside to ground skipper George Williams' grubber kick. It wasn't enough though as the Tigers held on for a six point win.
