Broncos legend Darren Lockyer announces retirement

Broncos, Maroons and Kangaroos legend Darren Lockyer has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2011 NRL season.

At 34, the club, state and national captain said it was time for him to move on, after playing 336 NRL matches, including four premierships in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2006. On top of this, Lockyer has featured in 54 Tests for Australia and 33 Queensland State of Origin appearances.

In a statement today, Lockyer said: "I'm still enjoying playing and excited about the Broncos for the rest of 2011. It will be hard to leave my team-mates at the Broncos but I know the timing is right."

"I've had a wonderful career as a rugby league player and I just feel it's time to move on to the next chapter."
