THE West Indies won the MX9s Preliminary Cup at St Albans Centurions on Sunday when they beat the South African Wild Dogs 26-10 in the final.
ST Albans Centurions have signed South African international winger Desi Kadima on a month's loan from London Skolars. The Centurions, who face fellow unbeaten side South London Storm in Saturday's National League 3 clash at Woollams, have taken Kadima for four week's to strengthen their back line and give the youngster some experience.
TWELVE rugby league and union clubs will converge on St Albans Centurions? Woollams ground next Sunday (16 May) to compete in a qualifying event for the second annual MX9s competition. The MX9s began last year with a successful event hosted by the Federation of Middlesex Societies and London Skolars at New River Stadium, with the Royal Engineers beating the Skolars in the final.
THREE born-and-bred Scottish players have been named in the Great Britain Students Rugby League squad to play France and Australia. Ardrossan?s Brian Hendry, Dougie Flockhart from Heriot Watt University Edinburgh and Calum Anderson of Peebles have all been selected for GB Students, despite playing in the Scotland Under-19 side at the Student RL Championships rather than the seniors event.
THE West Indies will make their Rugby League debut against Haringey Hornets on Sunday. The draw for the prelim tournament for the MX9s to be hosted by St Albans Centurions at their Woollams ground took place yesterday and pitches the new Windies side in with Haringey - the open age side put together by North London Development officer and London Skolars coach Alex Smits from local school players - and rugby union club Old Albanians, who play at Woollams.
SCOTLAND Under-19s must beat England for the first time when they meet at Swansea on Sunday if they are to keep their hopes alive of winning the Four Nations Championships. The Scots lost their opening game 34-28 to hosts Wales in Aberavon on Friday, despite five tries from Heriot Watt student Dougie Flockhart.
WORKINGTON Town forward Bryan Hendry, from Ardrossan, has been named captain of Scotland for Friday?s opening game in the European Under-19s Rugby League Championships against Wales in Aberavon. London Skolars? Keir Bell, formerly with London Broncos, is vice captain. Hendry trained with the full Scotland squad ahead of last November?s European Nations Cup clash with Ireland at Old Anniesland before signing for Workington where he has already played against Leeds Rhinos in the Powergen Challenge Cup.
ST Albans Centurions got their season off to a flying start with a 72-0 annihilation of St Ives in the RLC Cup at Woollams.
ST ALBANS CENTURIONS have invited amateur rugby league clubs from the game's heartlands to combine their trip to the Challenge Cup Final with an appearance at the MX9s tournament. The Centurions are hosting a qualifying event for the Middlesex Nines competition at their Woollams ground on Sunday 16 May 2004 and want clubs to call in on their way back home from Cardiff for an afternoon of entertaining nine-a-side rugby league.
ST Albans Centurions return to action this Sunday - February 29 - when they take on St Ives at Woollams at 2pm. Admission is free to see the first game in the Eastern Group of the RLC Cup, a pre-season competition in which St Albans play Hemel Stags and St Ives home and away. Cambridge have withdrawn from the tournament, leaving a blank weekend next week.
