Ugly scenes between players and fans after Salford down Huddersfield

An investigation is set to take place after Salford players Justin Carney and Junior Sa'u were involved in an altercation with fans after their win over Huddersfield on Easter Monday.

It's understood the pair were worried about the welfare of their families who were sitting close to where the incident had taken place, and entered the stands to check on them, which led to further confrontation.

The RFL and Marwan Koukash (owner of Salford Red Devils) have committed to identifying and punishing any offenders after fights broke out in the terraces.

Photos of the alleged incident quickly made their way onto social media, showing the players in ugly scenes with their own club's fans - with one such photo appearing to show Sa'u on the ground restrainig a fan. It's understood the players were responding to screaming from women and children at the front of a stand where it appeared a squashing or crush was taking place.

RFL CEO Nigel Wood was particularly forceful on the issue, telling media: "We do not condone violence of any kind and will ensure that anyone found to have acted improperly is dealt with accordingly."

Koukash said he had started an official investigation, apologising to the Giants and all the decent fans who attended the drama-filled afternoon at The John Smith's Stadium.
