Wentworthville triumph after 103 minutes

It took 103 minutes and featured 13 missed field goal attempts but the Wentworthville Magpies have eventually claimed the 2008 NSW Cup title with a gritty 12-8 win over the Newtown Jets at ANZ Stadium.

The Jets took an early lead with a try to winger Shaun Foley but then began to turn the ball over regularly and provide Wentworthville with plenty of opportunities. The Magpies levelled through winger Jonathan Wright before the Jets pushed ahead with a third wingers try to Byron Ford. All three conversions were missed (a sign of things to come?) leading to an 8-4 halftime lead to the Jets.

Both sides came out after halftime with renewed energy on defence before interchange forward Justin Horo was able to spark the Magpies with a couple of nice touches leading to a try for Etu Uaisele that tied the scores up once more. The last thirty minutes of regular time featured some sharp attack but mostly desperate defence as the Jets continually put themselves under pressure but somehow managed to repel the Magpies time after time.
